Meet Aaron Van Huysen
With more than 24 years of active-duty service in the U.S. Coast Guard and nearly three decades in the maritime industry, Aaron Van Huysen brings extensive regulatory, inspection, investigative, and operational experience to the maritime community. Much of his Coast Guard career was dedicated to marine safety and prevention, with a particular focus on vessel inspections, casualty investigations, regulatory compliance, and the safe operation of both U.S. and foreign-flag vessels.
Aaron’s career has included assignments aboard three U.S. Coast Guard cutters, two Aids to Navigation Teams, a Coast Guard station, and marine safety assignments at Sector New York and Marine Safety Detachment Cape Cod. His experience spans a wide range of vessel types, including small passenger vessels, high-speed ferries, towing vessels, barges, commercial workboats, cruise ships, tankers, bulk and freight vessels, chemical carriers, and RO/RO vessels.
Following his retirement from active-duty Coast Guard service, Aaron founded AVH Maritime Safety Consultant LLC (AVHMSC) to provide vessel owners, operators, attorneys, marine companies, and other industry professionals with practical, independent maritime expertise. His work includes marine surveys, Condition & Valuation surveys, regulatory compliance assessments, pre-Coast Guard and Port State Control inspections, casualty and condition investigations, ISM/SMS audits, vessel certification support, plan review, and operational consulting.
Aaron is a NAMS Associate Member, Liberian Flag Inspector, IMCA-certified eCMID/eMISW Inspector, and trained ISM Auditor, bringing both regulatory experience and current commercial maritime experience to each assignment.
